Quilt As You Go (QAYG)

I am so excited you want to explore the world of Quilt As You Go!  Participants should have a general knowledge of quilting.  In this class we will learn how to join your blocks with sashing the QAYG way.  This method is just one way to join patchwork blocks.  I will also demonstrate the cover strip method which is great for appliqué blocks or blocks that don’t have points.

***Please remember, this is a class on JOINING your blocks NOT quilting them. However, I will be happy to help you with that if you need me to.

We will be making a pinwheel table topper and the following is what needs to be done BEFORE class.

Fabric requirements for pinwheels AND work that will be done in class.

1.    ½ yd. backing fabric

2.    ½ yd. background fabric

3.    4 - 6” wide strips of fabric for focus fabric and cornerstone. (this is if each pinwheel will be different color).

4.    Batting

Make 4 pinwheel blocks.

These can be all the same fabric, 4 different fabrics or completely scrappy.

Make 16 (4 per block) HST with your preferred method and trim to 5”.

Need help making HST?  There are lots of videos on YouTube. I use the two at a time method. I cut larger and then trim to 5” with the Bloc Loc HST ruler.  Perfect every time!

Sew units together to make four 9 1/2" pinwheel blocks.

Cut four 10 1/2" pieces of your backing fabric and batting.

Layer your sandwich and quilt as desired.  You can do stitch-in-the-ditch, echoing, straight line, free motion, dot to dot, whatever you want to do.  If doing something other than stitch-in-the-ditch or echoing, stop your quilting 1/2" from the edge.  This way you don't lose any of your quilting when joining your blocks.

Here are a couple of examples of quilting:

Stitch-in-the-ditch and echo quilting.             Dot to Dot quilting - Notice the dots

Trim these blocks to 9 1/2" square and bring to class with you.

Supply List

What to bring to class with you.

1.    Your quilted blocks.

2.   Sewing machine with open toe foot or edge stitching foot.

3.   Background fabric for front sashing (left over from making pinwheels).

4.   Backing fabric for back sashing (left over from making pinwheels).

5.   Coordinating fabric for cornerstone.  5” square will work.

6.   Batting - needs to be the same batting you used for your blocks).

7.   Basting glue – I like Roxanne’s glue baste. A glue stick will work but I find having a dispenser with a fine tip helpful.

8.   Normal sewing supplies, thread, scissors, pins, clips, small iron and ironing surface.

I will have some tools that I use available at the class for you to try out when making your sashing.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
